Our Evolution MPC associates have plentiful travel opportunities throughout the year, and many days find us attending regional trainings and networking events. Our team members connect with many people, so we’ve developed some icebreakers to use when approaching someone we don’t know. Here are a few of our favorites:
• “Hey, are you a friend of Jessica’s?”: Our people at Evolution MPC use this one sparingly, but it’s an immediate conversation booster to ask a fellow attendee if they know one of your acquaintances. Even if the answer is “No,” this is a great opportunity to segue into finding industry colleagues in common.
• “Networking isn’t my favorite!”: Not everyone is as comfortable with networking as we are at Evolution MPC, so admitting that it’s not the easiest prospect can help the other party relax. Using this opener is a good way to open the floor to more in-depth conversations that might not otherwise happen.
• “Where’s the quiet part of the room? I’d love to talk!”: Many connections are made in the main room of a conference or industry event, where lots of people are gathered. A common search for a better place to chat will put you on the same team as your new contact, and while you’re looking, you can get to know each other.
Take these strategies with you to your next event, and watch your network grow!
