Commuting isn’t typically considered an enjoyable way to pass the time. Admittedly, we haven’t always been fans of the rides to and from Evolution MPC’s headquarters. We’ve since learned that there are many ways to make the experiences more enjoyable and productive.
Podcasts and audiobooks have become prized bits of technology for us. Those who take public transportation enjoy print books as well. In any case, reading or listening to world news and learning about industry trends are helpful ways to get focused as we head to Evolution MPC. On our rides home, we prefer to relax with some fiction.
We’ve also discovered that commuting (even when driving) is ideal for practicing mindfulness. We do some breathing exercises and settle into the present. It’s a means of meditation that helps us get ready for the day ahead, and to wind down after one. As yoga instructor Mandy Ingber says, “Your brain functions better and becomes sharper and clearer. You become more present in the moment and are able to troubleshoot effortlessly.”
Although it’s tempting for some of us to check our email during our commutes, we actually avoid doing so. We’ve found that instead of giving us a head start on the next day of work, it puts us in the mind-set of responding to others’ demands – not very proactive!
